Utrecht weather is characteristically maritime, influenced by major winds blowing in from the southwest. One of the main characteristics of Utrecht weather is the cool conditions that dominate patterns during the summer season, as well as the mildness of its winters.
Average daily temperatures during the months from April right through to September are between 18.7°C to a maximum of 25°C. Although it only happens on rather rare occasions, these temperatures can be experienced in March and October. The hottest months of the year are June, July and August which usually experience temperatures of 30 °C.
Utrecht weather during the winter season – and most specifically during December, January and February – is dominated by cold, icy days where temperatures average around 2° C to just below 0 °C.
Clouds in general make an appearance every day, and in the winter months fog often thrives, while rainfall occurs frequently is relatively equally divided between each month. Average annual rainfall is about 615 mm, with the majority falling in the summer and autumn months; this is due to the intensity rather than the regularity of rainy days. July is the driest month of the year with an average of 3mm of rain. In sharp contrast January is the wettest month of the year experiencing 114mm of precipitation. Lightning along with heavy showers are characteristics of weather in Utrecht during summer.
If you are visiting the city during the summer season when Utrecht weather is at its absolute finest, you are in for a real treat, especially if you are a water lover. The possibilities of exploring the splendours this water city has to offer are truly limitless. For example take a trip on the canals- preferably on a Venetian gondola or a “plof” boat – and take in the magnificence of the wharf houses with their historic facades that are lined up across the shore line. For those with a romantic streak, a trip around the canal on a rowing boat or canoe during spring is definitely a must.
If on the other hand you happen to find your self in the city during the winter season, the cold that dominates weather in Utrecht during this time of the year should not spoil the experience for you. Take the time to visit the Witch museum that is located at nearby Oudewater, or rejoice in the many historical buildings Utrecht has to offer. There is for example the Dom tower which is located at the Dom Square. Standing at an imposing 112 metres, the Dom tower is not only Holland’s tallest church tower, but also one of the country’s best examples of Gothic architecture.
Although the mild, damp Utrecht weather is ideal for dairying and livestock raising, the limited sunshine restricts the growing of food crops.
